Unalloyed Pleasure October 8, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this recording as an lp at least 30 years ago. It was one of the greatest musical listening experiences of my life. I wore the record out and it was out of print. The recording technique for this record is beyond compare. They recorded it at twice the normal recording speed on tape that was double width to catch the greatest bandwidth with the least distortion.
The music is kind of a "call and response" that is not uncommon with folk music (the guitar/banjo duet from the movie Deliverence comes to mind or some forms of church singing). The playing is beautiful in the extreme. It is almost achingly beautiful and yet totally joyful and playful without the deeply oontemplative quality so common with ragas. To me this record was made by these artists to create a joyful experience.
From what I read about Banerjee, he did not like the studio recording experience because of the limitations placed on him by the structure, time restrictions, and lack of audience involvement. You could never tell by the results. Khan's playing is fabulous as always. It does not feel as though he played even one note too many. The economy of his playing is as wonderful as his technique. He may be the greatest sarod player that I have ever had the pleasure to listen to.
This disc is going out of print for the moment. The people at Ali Akbar College of Music say that the Khan family is focusing on digitally archiving the master's legacy which will be a gift for posterity and for the study of Hindustani music, but in the shortrun, this fabulous disc may be unavailable again for some time. Snap up the used copies that are around before it is too late.
I wish I had the words to describe how listening to this record makes me feel, but I just don't have the words to describe it. I would give this a million stars if I could.
Wow October 31, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am new to this genre of music, and once again, have the customer reviewers to thank for bringing this sublime album to my attention. These guys absolutely tear the house down in this pair of sitar duets, accompanied by Pandit Mahapurush Misra on tabla. Audio quality is superb. A new favorite.
Beautiful, exquisite, wonderful! October 5, 2006 I think sarod music is easier to listen to and prettier than sitar and Khan Sahib is the undisputed master of the sarod. But even more than that, I think the beauty, depth and gentleness of his spirit comes through in his playing. To say that you will weep when listening to this music is not an understatement. This music is like a religious experience. It is simply amazing!

The reviews read are "spot on" and in humility and recognition of his mastery the only comment I could make is ... MAGIC ! iti
A work of genius! August 13, 2002 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Let me begin by saying that I am a new-comer to the genre, and that most of the music I usually listen to is classic rock and blues. Nevertheless, this CD has completely captivated me. It is soaring, sublime, beautiful music. Even in my ignorance it is clear that the performance is genius. It has opened-up a whole new world of music for me. The CD is a precious jewel.
