If you get on its wavelength, this is great September 20, 2002 Amid all the late-'80s flutter over Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, it was nice -- and somewhat bold -- of Peter Gabriel's RealWorld label to put out such a calm, stately Indian classical album. Two longer ragas featuring sarod and violin, along with some understated percussion. Nice record; check it out if you get the chance.
Another Coffee-Table Effort from "Real World" Label February 26, 2001 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
One can hardly blame Krishnamurty Sridhar for recording with his own brother. However, I wonder if this recording would have taken place if Shivakumar weren't his brother, but just some violinist off the street? Sridhar studied with ZM Dagar and so was no doubt raised on the fantastic jugalbandi of Nasirs Moinuddin/Aminuddin and Zahiruddin/Faiyazuddin. It's a good thing there are audio samples for this album, because you can decide for yourself if Shringar offers the kind of ragadari one can expect/demand/hope for from a musician of Sridhar's pedigree, or not ...
Tailored to the listener with a learned attention span September 4, 1999 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Indian classical music requires a discerning ear and a non-MTV attention span. The first track is 40+ minutes, and the second is more than 20.This being as it may, most will have no problem paying attention, particuarly to the second track. It builds up to a breathtaking crescendo, culminating in an extended call-and-response dialogue between the instruments. A masterful performance for devotees of Indian music.
Sensual music July 28, 1998 Ragas build on a simple element for an extended period of time. The first here is forty-five minutes, but it is brilliant throughout. A good introduction to Indian music.
Blissfully relaxing July 11, 1998 The 47 minute track 1 (Raga Bageshri), intended to be played at night, is relaxing, but becomes boring after a few minutes of roughly the same thing. Track 2 (Raga Bhairavi), however, is a truly beautiful piece of North Indian classical music, and the musical philosophy described in the interesting sleeve interview is evident. The sarod is a beautiful instrument, and it is safe to say that Sridhar is the best sarod player in the world. The two tracks were recorded at the WOMAD festivals in England and Canada. A unique CD, the second track makes this highly recommended.
