Product Description In the valley of Fruitless mountain, a young girl named Minli lives in a ramshackle hut with her parents. In the evenings, her father regales her with old folktales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man on the Moon, who knows the answers to all of life's questions. Inspired by these stories, Minli sets off on an extraordinary journey to find the Old Man on the Moon to ask him how she can change her family's fortune. She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.
Grace Lin, author of the beloved Year of the Dog and Year of the Rat, returns with a wondrous story of adventure, faith, and friendship. A fantasy crossed with Chinese folklore, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a timeless story reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz. Her beautiful illustrations, printed in full-color, accompany the text throughout. Once again, she has created a charming, engaging book for young readers.

The power of stories July 28, 2010 Dienne (Cicero, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
In this charming and delightful tale by Grace Lin, a young girl (we don't know how old), Minli, lives with her parents in a poor village in the shadow of Fruitless Mountain. The family toils all day and barely has enough to eat. But Minli gets perhaps greater sustenance from the stories her father tells, particularly about the Old Man of the Moon. Inspired by a goldfish, Minli sets out for the Neverending Mountain to find the Old Man of the Moon to ask how to change her family's fortune. Along the way she befriends a flightless dragon, speaks to the king of the City of Bright Moonlight, encounters the angry Green Tiger and meets the Happy Family, all of whom share their stories, based on themes from Chinese fairy tales, which help guide Minli on her quest (well, except for the Green Tiger, but we hear plenty of stories about him).
The main story weaves in and out of the stories within the story and all are intertwined in a masterful and poetic way that makes the story both simple and yet profound. All the stories wrap up as a nice, tidy package, but not in a way that makes the book stilted, but rather like one of those 3-D wooden puzzles in which each piece, joined in the correct order, creates a perfect whole. The beautiful full-color illustrations blend seamlessly with the story and enhanced the enchanting quality of the book.
As other reviewers have said, this is one of the best children's books I've ever read, perhaps in a class with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "The Little Prince". My only regret about the book is that my daughters are just a shade too young to share it with them quite yet* - I can't wait to do so!
* The editorial reviews say that the book is for grades 3-6, but I think age 5 to 6 would be a perfect time for a parent to read this book to a child -while children are still young enough to be enchanged by the magic.
Bask in the glow of Minli's quest! July 25, 2010 S. Silverman (California) Minli's fantasy quest is a delightful ride to join. Beginning in an effort to improve her family's fortune, Minli acts upon the stories her father weaves, and seeks the distant Old Man of the Moon, someone that nobody has ever seen who lives in a distant place that may or may not even exist. Using the story line to move forward and interwoven stories told by a number of characters to explain why things are or how things came to be, Lin tells Minli's adventure that radiates with the gentle glow of the moon, shining and sure. Minli's goodness and genuine good will and thoughtfulness end up merging with her imagination and unanticipated realities to bring her friends in a dragon, various fish, and other humans both powerful and simple, leading her to travel far but rarely alone and to confront magic, unpleasant realities, challenges, dangers, and opportunities in ways that foster her progress and her personal growth and wisdom as well. This is enjoyable on many levels, the quest itself, the creativity of Lin and the speaking characters, the wisdom of Chinese perspective, well-established and placed values, and Minli, a character worth caring about. Its Newbery Honor was well earned and in most years this would have won, I think. Terrific reading for intermediate grades readers and up.
Delightfully Satisfying July 9, 2010 Tamara deAuset (Kansas City) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a Mom of two boys, ages 7 & 10. I checked this out at the library for myself, though. I just finished it tonight, and I have to say -- I am delightfully satisfied. This is a story I will read to my children, and I am buying a copy, because it is the rare kind of book that I will keep for my children to read to their children someday. I have no doubt I will read it again just for me, too, and it is sure to be gifted by me to a friend or two. It is THAT good. It is an engaging story, with meaningful stories within the story. It is rich with lessons about friendship, adventure, gratitude, and the secret of happiness. Minli is a heroine to fall in love with, and Grace Lin is an author to watch. This is one of those rare books worth not only buying, but passing down.
Must read with your kids! June 19, 2010 JJ in the mountains (North Carolina) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Our family has been reading this book together....kids are 9 and 6. At first the kids weren't that interested, but now.....they can't wait to hear what happens! A very enjoyable book!
Newberry Honor April 29, 2010 bizyreader (Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Minli is a poor young girl who spends her time working hard in the fields with her mother and father. They live in a poor village. At night, Minli's father likes to keep her entertained by telling wonderful tales of the Jade Dragon and the Old Man of the Moon. Minli's mother is unhappy with their poor life and thinks the stories are silly and worthless.
One day, a goldfish peddler comes to town and Minli spends half of her life savings (1 copper piece) to buy a beautiful goldfish. Little did Minli know that this goldfish was on a journey. So begins the story of Minli's search for the Old Man of Moon who can help her and her family have a better life.
This was a very sweet story. The interweaving of Chinese folklore and Minli's story was flawless. The pace of the story was good. Following Minli's journey and in the end finding that it is important to spend time appreciating what you have makes for a good read. I think readers of all ages will appreciate the themes of appreciation and friendship.
