5 out of 5 stars Great Continuation of Angel   November 29, 2008
When I started reading this, I had so many moments of saying "So THATS what happened to ...." that my husband had to pick it up immediately after I finished. I'm a huge fan of all the Buffy Omnibuses and of Season 8 so I was really pleased with both the artwork and the story line for Angel. The hardcover was just very nicely put together, it even had a little built in bookmark. If your a fan of Angel, this book will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars A compelling start to season six   November 29, 2008
After watching the entirety of Angel Seasons 1-5 (after watching all of Buffy season's 1-7) recently, for the very first time, I think it was fate that I decided to watch them both finally, here in 2008. I had always known about them but to say I was a fan during their actual runs on TV would be false. I saw a few episodes of Buffy and Angel over the years but it is built into my personality that I cannot stand to jump into the middle of a saga and try to catch up, so with life keeping me busy, I was finally able to make the move and get into this universe. I knew how well written they were and always wanted to get to know them. Now I do and I am fortunate enough to be able to slide into these comics as well as Buffy's seemlessly after finishing both shows.

With both Buffy and Angel, the comic books, the authors are able to do something on a more sweeping scale, with no concern of budgets or limitations of the small screen (or movie screen, for that matter). It was hard for me to imagine where things could go with Angel or if it would be worth the journey. The TV series ended on such a dramatic note I was worried where it would go. As you might guess based on the stars on my review, I certainly was not disappointed. Angel continues on his dark and brooding quest to fight evil, despite that fact that winning is not a part of the equation. Seeing the other characters that had stood at his side for many years, in all their new versions, was great. While I am not interested in providing spoilers, let us say that we certainly get some surprises here. Ones that perhaps would not have gone over during the TV series (I am thinking network executives putting a nix on certain elements that have developed in the comics). There are certainly dark abysses that this season is likely to explore, with no apologies and no regrets. I still mourn for the loss of Cordy, Fred, and Wes and find it hard to swallow the loss or corruption of someone who I grew attached to but I am also appreciative of a story that pulls no punches and is not apologetic as it allows things to carry forward as they must, rather than trying to water it down or take out the parts we might not be able to swallow very easily or adjust to.

I guess I just love the torment and anguish that makes Angel who he is and this series what it is. I can't wait to get Volume 2 and 3 to see where things go from here.

4 out of 5 stars What could have been...   October 7, 2008

As a devoted Buffy/Angel fanatic, I figured that after the launch of Buffy: Season Eight at Dark Horse that it wouldn't be long before Joss Whedon let loose some new adventures for Angel as well. Well, here we are with Angel: After the Fall from IDW, which is basically what season six could have been. Picking up shortly after the series ended, Los Angeles has pretty much been turned into Hell on earth, and we soon learn just what has happened to Angel and his crew. In this first storyarc, we learn the fates of Angel, Spike, Gunn, Ilyria, Connor, Lorne, and even wolf-girl Nina and lightning-girl Gwen. There are a number of absolutely delicious twists and turns that will catch you by surprise as well. Co-plotted by Whedon and veteran Angel and Spike comics writer Brian Lynch; Angel: After the Fall isn't as engrossing as Dark Horse's Buffy series, but it is an entertaining ride regardless, even if the story becomes a little incomprehensible during all the big action. Franco Urru provides some great artwork as well, and IDW has done a fine job assembling the storyarc in a very handsome hardcover edition. All in all, Angel: After the Fall is a great new direction for the heroic vamp, and is a more than worthwhile trip for fans of the series.

2 out of 5 stars Disapointed but not suprised   October 1, 2008

The story and dialogue is not up to the standards of what you'd expect from an "official" Whedonverse continuum. Especially after Buffy's season 8. Also the art is fuzzy and feels a bit tight fitted.

Unless the story improves from this, it would've been better to leave it at the excellent cliffhanger ending of the tv series.

4 out of 5 stars Great book to wrap a great series   September 23, 2008
This book was awesome. I am deployed to the middle east, but I will say this, that book helped pass the time. Can't wait for the other volumes.
