Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
In his 14th book, bestselling author Nicholas Sparks tells the unforgettable story of a man whose brushes with death lead him to the love of his life.

Is there really such thing as a lucky charm? The hero of Nicholas Sparks's new novel believes he's found one in the form of a photograph of a smiling woman he's never met, but who he comes to believe holds the key to his destiny. The chain of events that leads to him possessing the photograph and finding the woman pictured in it is the stuff of love stories only a master such as Sparks can write.

3 out of 5 stars Typical Sparks   December 4, 2008
I just finished Nicholas Sparks latest book and okay I'm in the minority here but it was just so-so. IT seemed very much like some of his other books. Guy meets girl under interesting circumstances; there's a child and dog of course. They fall in love but the guy (usually the guy) does something upsetting and they separate only to get back together at the end or one of them dies. It's a given someone has to die. Maybe not always one of the couple but at least one of the main characters.

I found Logan a likable character and also Beth's son. Beth is somewhat annoying! I never could warm up to her a lot. She doesn't like any military man because her brother was killed by friendly fire? Okay that's real mature! She falls in love with Logan who has done nothing but help her and her grandmother and her son. IT seems like she's always trying to find something wrong with Logan and when her sleeze of a husband tells her Logan has carried her picture and came there to find her, she takes this as gospel and she tears Logan apart even throwing a vase at him. Again very mature! She won't even allow him to explain. I think I would have found it quite romantic if a man had carried my picture and walked across country to put a real person to that face. In no sense did he ever act like a stalker. So by the next day she's ready to forgive him. Oh how big of her. If he had told her in the beginning she would have had the same reaction and then Logan would never have got to know the family or help her and the grandmother. Oh there wouldn't have been a story either.

Then the ending leaves a lot. There is no explanation of what happened in the river during the storm. Two men are drowning and the next chapter is the Epilogue. What happened in the water?? Then suddenly this sleeze of a husband is a great guy? Huh!

On a more positive note, I do appreciate the fact there is a lack of profanity in Mr. Sparks books and though there are love scenes they are not graphic. I do think Mr. Sparks is a talented writer but was just a bit disappointed in the development of especially Beth's character in this book. I did think this book was rather wordy with whole chapters of someone's thoughts. I guess that was to get to know that character better but I found myself skimming at those points.

It's not really a bad book and someone else may look at the characters differently than I, so I would still recommend it as a good read.

4 out of 5 stars great premise with Sparks formula   December 3, 2008
Nicholas Sparks has written another hard to put down page turner. The concept of a Marine in Iraq finding a photo of a woman, considering it a good luck charm and seeking her out in person is intriguing. We know before they even meet that Logan will fall in love with her; after all, Sparks female protagonists are all "extraordinarily beautiful in a natural way with no real major character flaws." I didn't buy it that he walked all the way from Colorado. That seems borderline to me. It would have been more believable if he had started out from, say Alabama, or would have picked up an old junker to drive from Colorado. I can buy the obsession with looking for her but not the walking cross country bit. The zany Nana gets a bit too much as do the constantly repetitious times Ben and Zeus play together (does this kid ever have homework?) This story has a lot of parallels with an earlier Sparks novel "The Guardian" (the lovable dog, the evil antigonist). I liked the alternating chapters based on the viewpoint of Thibault, Beth and Clayton. All in all a good read, not just for women but for men too.

2 out of 5 stars Not much more substance than a Harlequin Novel   December 1, 2008
I have been home sick and was looking for a good book to read. My Mom had ordered this book and passed it on to me. Quite honestly, I don't think I'll ever read another Nicholas Sparks novel. Although, I have enjoyed some of his earlier works, The Notebook and Message in a Bottle, this book seemed to have little more substance than a Harlequin novel. Call me jaded, but that's the way I felt.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST   November 30, 2008
I am never disappointed with a Nicholas Sparks best, this was no exception. I enjoyed this book all the way to the last page and started counting the days until the next book comes out.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!   November 30, 2008
This was my second Nicholas Sparks read. I read 'The Wedding' first after watching and LOVING 'The Notebook' movie. The wedding was okay, the last bit of it, but it took a while to get good.

I bought The Lucky One because it had better reviews on here and I liked Nicholas' writing style.

And it was hard for me to put down, great book, highly recommend it!
