Product Description You're a renowned hacker, the most notorious cyberspace thief in the corporate world. Caught during a risky break-in, you become indentured to Diego, a greedy trioptimum exec who bankrolls a rare cyberjack implant operation. After six-months in a healing coma, you awaken to the twisted aftermath of a terrible disaster. Where are the surgeons? Why is the station in such disrepair? Slowly, the very chilling realization that something is very wrong creeps over you. Once a prime corporate research facility, Citadel now teams with mindless cyborgs, robots and terribly mutated beings, all programmed to serve SHODAN, a ruthless artificial intelligence. There's scarcely time to think before it unleashes the first terror......

Tthe best adventure/RPG/FPS's of the 90's! August 19, 2007 This is a fantastic game! You have to get the CD version because the dgitized speech and the 640x480 make all the difference in the world! In fact it is still so popular you can get it running in XP at 1024x768 (!) by going to this site and following the instructions after you buy the game! (If your PC cannot handle 1024x768 you can use the 800x600 file instead!)

With fantastic cyberpunk immersion in a world of modern shallow fantasy goblin/wizard RPG's and a story that would make a great movie, System Shock is a Tour De Force and a total Masterpiece! The various data and emails you find with audio and text messages from the crew of Citadel are sometimes very sorrowful and the voice and attitude of Shodan makes her a real enemy, not just a game character! She will taunt you and insult you and really make you want to get her for the things she has done and to stop what she wishes to do - destroy the Earth!
With the ability to learn and crouch and lay down, this game was 5 years ahead of it's time! The Cyberspace that you have to enter is ingenious in it's implementation and the whole level design and space station layout is incredible! The sound effects are spot on with all the beeps and clicks and distant robot and cyborg sounds this game can really get you nervous! The music is excellent - especially the 'elevator music' on the credits and when you are using an elevator (of course!)!
I just cannot say enough good things about this game - you just have to give it a try and see what great gaming is all about! I mean, with Shodan throwing out the following challenge, are you going to be a wuss and ignore it?!
'Look at you, hacker: a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?'!!!
The best game EVER created! June 18, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If I could break the rules and rate this game 6 stars here on Amazon, I would not hesitate. This game is a true gem of gaming. System Shock is one of those rare games that just nails everything. It is one of those games that, after you finish it, you are left with wondering what game could possibly have topped that experience.
Had I played this game when it first debuted, it would have easily consumed and horrified me, equally. Even to this day, emersing yourself into this game can scare you in spite of the dated graphics. System Shock innovated in so many ways, yet, it never got the recognition for its achievments. It was the first game to do many things. It had a real-time world to explore similar to Doom, but you could do so much more in that world than in Doom's. Granted, I LOVE Doom, but System Shock transcends mere gaming and IMHO should be considered a true historic gaming monument.
So what does SS1 do that so many games at the time didn't? First, you could look in all directions, jump, duck, go prone, and lean around corners. No one even thought of these things in a game until years later! Second, there were over a dozen weapons in SS1, each one having multiple different types of ammo suiting different situations. The items you could use had tons of variety as well - stimulants, med packs, batteries, hacking tools - you name it, it was in this game!!!! I can't forget to mention, all of the unique gadgets such as force fields, jet-boots, sense-around, night vision, etc... Yes, all of this and more is packed into this game!!!!! Then there is the awesome voice acting and the omnipotent Shodan that haunts, torments, and ambushes you throughout the game! There are games to this day that do not even come close to this level of depth and detail!!!! I almost forgot to mention - cyberspace!!! Yes, when you hack into the computer nodes, you actually enter a virtual reality 3d cyberspace. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!
If you like games with great plot and depth, you absolutely must install this game, install VDMsound, install DOSbox, and play this game through! I pray that they make a sequel to the equally awesome System Shock 2, because this series deserves a sequel more than any!!!!
It is indeed a classic. March 5, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm sure by now most of these are the CD rom versions - Only the CD rom versions had the "high-res" (640 x 480) graphics and the "talkie" feature. The 9-disk 3.5" floppy set that I originally purchased years ago had neither of these features (limited to 320 x 240 screen resolution) and I was a bit angry, as I paid $55 for the floppy version, having no idea that the much-improved CD version would be released just a couple months later. Need less to say, I am no longer angry, as I now own both versions, and would have been happy to pay $200 for such a wonderful experience as this game.
I own nearly every game ever made by the now-defunct Looking Glass Studios (almost every one of their games is considered a classic now), and System Shock 1 and 2 are among my favorites, though the "Thief" series they did was their best work in my opinion.
Gameplay on this original "System Shock 1" was quite a bit more complex than the standard First-person Shooter. But once you get used to it, and comfortable with the somewhat complex controls, the game and story will utterly draw you in. It's been years since I've played it, so I can't say if it'll run on an XP machine, but I did get it running on a Win98 machine several years ago.
The beginning , and still the best. November 7, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I cannot even explain how much this game affected me. I was a gamer for 5 years or so before this came out in 1994. The instant i installed it, i was drawn in. And, i have never looked back. The plot, incredible. The graphics , 3 years AHEAD of its' time! The graphics now look dated, but the game will always be great. This was an early 'Looking Glass' game! Those guys went on to do THIEF! If you've never heard of System Shock before, go on this... There has never been a more powerful team than 'Looking Glass','Origin', and 'Modern Age Books'! Those three collaberated on this outstanding classic PC game. I was even able to get this to run on my XP system! (Athlon). I hope every gamer gets the chance to play this at least once. It will show them how greatness began!
