 Mass Effect is so worth everything November 5, 2008

Mass Effect is amazing. I had some technical problems at first (i needed to update my video drivers and at one point my computer had trouble with texture mapping), but one I figured those out I was able to experience the tour de force that this game truly is. I strongly recommend this game to anyone who even kind of likes games with good story lines. This game has an amazing story and the gameplay is solid too. Buy it. It is worth it. Trust me.

I generally don't write reviews for games, but felt the need to warn off customers from this one. I've played through the game beginning to end and the story is a good one, when the graphics work its actually a quite well rendered game very similar to knights of the old republic. thats it for the good stuff.
The problem comes with the constant crashing (15 windows bluescreen crashes and numerous other lockups). EA tech support's briliant advice to counter act crashing was to hit alt-f4 (terminating the program) when it crashed. Also present were numerous texture problems, at one point I found myself driving a quite well rendered vehicle over a non-existent road on either side of which must have been lava, although it could also not be seen. This is surprising in that I have a N-vidia 8800 GTO video card that should easily handle the graphic requirements.
In short I wanted to love this game, but its implementation on the PC, ant EA's horrible customer support has put a nail in the coffin of all EA games for me from here on out.

I am not commenting on DRM. There are plenty of reviews that cover this topic, so I am rating this game for those only interested in knowing what the content is like.
Overall, the story is amazing, the graphics are top notch (if you have the right system specs), and it's just down right fun. The main quest is a bit on the short side. If you rented it, you could knock it out in a weekend. The added value is the many side quests you can take in between main missions. I highly recommend you try to complete as many as you can in your first play through. After I beat the game, I really lost motivation to start a new game. Who wants to revisit the same missions again and again? I probably passed up a number of side quests I shouldn't have, but I'm not replaying the game to try them out.
Also, and this is kind of a side note, but it bothered me that the main quest's story created a sense of urgency to complete it. Even though it doesn't matter how much time you spend exploring around, I still felt compelled to stick to the main missions.
So I say again, enjoy the side quests to get the most out of Mass Effect. It's an outstanding ride, but it's one that you won't be saying "let's do it again!" after.

I played this game over a friends house and I was very impressed.
However I will NOT support rent game policy (aka limited activations).
I never liked that policy for operating systems either. I can't tell you the amount of times I had to call and beg microsoft to let me reactivate my xp.
My situation:
I love to customize my PC, so I often update (change) memory, video cards, sound cards, etc. If you change your hardware around enough the software believes it is a system change and counts it as a re-activation.
I also love editing on my computer which takes up a lot of space. Which means sometimes I have to uninstall games or other programs and do space management. It doesn't mean I want to delete the game completely as I keep the save and profile files. It just means I may only keep 3 or 4 games on my PC and uninstall/reinstall as I see fit.
If I pay 30-60 dollars for a game I should pay for a unlimited licence to play that game.
If I wanted to play a change for a finite licence I would go to an arcade. FORCED HOME ARCADES CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT HAPPEN! Do not support this action!

This game was pretty fun the first time through but doesn't change that much on harder difficulty and is pretty easy to begin with. the renegade/paragon system is ok but doesn't really allow for that much choice, and sometime the dialog seems very scripted and forced. Also the team AI is somewhat clumsy, in tough fights they seem to just get killed no matter waht you do.
